Precision Agriculture based on IoT active connections is a rapidly growing research field, where controlled- quality production, water use optimisation, reduced deployment of pesticides and fertilizers are key issues. These technologies support the improvement of food quality while helping agriculture to respect the environment. Electronic Circuits and Systems (CAS) are ideal tools for interfacing the data sources, processing the data, extracting relevant information along the whole food chain (from farmers and the professional stakeholders to the consumers), and contribute to implement eco-friendly, safe, circular and practical solutions. This CAS Distinguished Lecture, provides an overview of electronics for precision agriculture, analyses solutions that can bring relevant innovations, advancing the existing strategies based on remote or indirect measurements, by instead in-place measuring the plant and soil parameters associated with data on environmental conditions. Application scenarios for crop monitoring, water control, information communication and decision support will be presented.
